I'm a parking manager at a major hotel in Boston, I have bunch of good guys under my direction. I have to admit I feel as if I have the grueling task of being a one man show. I have a pretty ugly situation just about every single day... 1)I work at a union hotel 2)I have a lot of arguments over tips and skipping turns 3) Staff not motivated to be the best team in Boston 4)What in heavens name do I do..!!??

I manage and operate a parking and valet company in Providence, RI. For some events we work, the guys vote to pool the tips for the night or for that particular shft. Have you condidered that Yet?

My A.M guys do it and they work very well in these circumstances. I have tried to get them to pool and they simply don't trust each other. I will reconsider it again and use some tact this time around.

Thanks for the reply...

Have you looked into the computerized valet parking systems? I just talked to some valet guys in vegas, they all use hand helds and ticket scanners that keep the parks and pulls assigned evenly. They all seemed content as there was no more fighting over favoritism and guys pulling cars just for tips. It also seemed to keep the flow going, I didn't see much back up.

Gentlemen and ladies, want to play it safe.
I work at The Westin in Boston. Parking isn't outsourced. I'd say I'm kept pretty busy, this is why I couldn't respond any earlier. I have a few strikes against me at this time. 1) I've been trying to get approval for a new system for about 3yrs. I do have quite a task in front of me... I'm responsible for The doorman, valets and cashiers. I don't have ticket dispensers so I'm sure you know where this is headed... I can't sequentially issue tickets. I have two doormen on at a time issuing tickets and there's no way to issue those puppies in sequence. From an auditing stand point it's a nightmare. Try as I may I'm stretched between keeping that machine running which in my book is a Monster. I have then to contend taking care all the admin. stuff... that keeps me in tune with every facet of the hotel. IE: associate satisfaction/Guest satisfaction/training and development of myself and staff/operations meeting/rooms meeting/problem resolution meeting and did I mention I don't get paid what I know to be a fact competetive Dir. of Parking salary. Kind of get where I'm coming from... My tiny dept. with 230 spaces puts 2Mil. on the map.

go with a valet company and make your life easier, work for them and get better pay! Tons of companies that just focus on hotel operations.

I'm liking the sound of that more and more. I'm thinking career however I see that I'm going to work harder and not financially reap the fruit of my labors.

I'm not looking for anyone at this time. however I will keep you posted.

I work for a vaelt company in Long Island. The best solution to that problem is have one perosn hold all the tips until the end of the night and then split. this is one of the biggest problems in valet parking right next loosing key's and accidents

I use to work at the Westin Galleria and Oaks in Houston, TX. I worked for a company called Towne Park, LTD. We were hired by the hotel to provide valet service. The hotel had their own doormen's and sometimes it was a battle with them about the tips. Their doormen would be so greedy and sneaky. But for the most part the valet team worked together and we all split the tips. of course there are always some who didnt pitch it all in, but thats the difficult part of the valet business. I now operate my own company, and in my hiring process i put a lot of emphasis on trust and respect. good luck.
